Online Journal

Dear students!
As I have mentioned in the letter, I would like you to post here and report on your assignment on online journals. Those who have posted here and added at least one comment will be considered present at our virtual class:) I am looking forward to your posts:)

  1. I analysed only one journal, but I hope, it's enough.
    Journal on biology.

    1. As far as I could tell, the journal is for everybody, who is interested in cellular biology (the articles are mainly on this subject), but still I think it would be easier for specialists to read it.

    2. The language is quite readable. Although there are many expressions I didn't understand, I could still understand the main thought on the text.

    3. The articles were written by various authors, so there is no certain source where the information is coming from. But there are given all the authors' places of work (+addresses). Also a list on books and websites is given where I can find out more.

4.It's very easy to find things as there is a "search bar" and the contents of every issue are available in date order since the year 2002.

    5. I think, that as it's a biology journal, there should be articles about different topics (ecology, species etc.). There were too many articles about viruses and topics like that.

    6. The advertising was minimal

    7. Antiviral drugs- viirusevastased ravimid
    intracellular contraction- rakusisene kokkutõmme
    adjuvant- abistav, profülaktiline
    recombine-taaskombineeruma

  3. I analysed National Geographic.

    1) I think this magazine is for both –specialists and people interested in these subjects
    2) The language is quite understandable, even though there is some specific vocabulary. But on the whole, it seems that the texts are not meant to be read only by scientists.
    3) I believe this magazine is reliable, as only specialists write the articles, but I could not find any information about the authors, as there are very many of them. Moreover, this magazine has had a good reputation since it was first published and there have not been any incidents with false information or something like that.
    4) It is easy to find things there, as on the left side, there is the main list of categories they have. And by clicking on one theme, you get to the next page, where are subcategories like texts or videos. Obviously, there is also a „search bar”, when you want to find something specific.
    5) I like the most, that the articles are very thorogh, but still not too spcientific. In addition, they always have updated information wiht relavant videos and interviews.
    6) The advertising was discreet and reasonable.
    7) Forebears – esivanemad
    Scrutiny – läbivaatamine, põhjalik uurimine
Curvature of spine – selgroo kumerus/kõverus
Bipedal way of life – kahejalgne eluviis

  4. I analysed Journal of Biology (probably the same as Maarja's?)
    http://jbiol.com/

The journal has a nice homepage without excessive advertising, it looks trustworthy.

The articles are written by different authors all over the world, many of them working at recognized institutes or universities. It is possible, however, for any subscriber of the journal to submit his/her own articles - they are published after being accepted for publication by the Editorial Board of the journal.
As there are many different authors, the language and topics are very varied, although most of the articles should be understandable for people interested in the subject, not only specialists.

It's possible to navigate by choosing the number/date of the issues or by searching the articles by some key words. I would have also liked to see a list of themes or categories, where I can browse articles on similar topics, because searching by keywords can sometimes give very unexpected results from a different subject field than the one I was looking for.

What I liked the most was the relatively large collection of references under every article, so it was easy to find some more information on the subject, if one's interested.

    lineage - sugupuu
    clinching - kindel, otsustav
elongation of limbs - jäsemete pikenemine
    gene expression - geeni avaldumine

  5. I also analysed the Journal of Biology. I hope that is okay.

The journal is for both specialists and people who are simply interested in the subject. The international journal is published by BioMed Central and it contains biological research articles from all over the world.
Language is understandable but occasionally very specific.
Advertising is reasonable, it is related to the subjects covered by the journal.
The authors are mainly scientists whose researches and articles are accepted by the well-qualified online administrators. But I can submit my own research as well if it is considered appropriate.
It is easy to find what one's looking for because the page has its own search engine and at the top of the page there is the "Journals A-Z" which contains the alphabetised names of all the journals where the articles have originally been published in.
When reading an article, a sidebar appears on the left, which always contains similar references (background, methods, results, etc.) and I liked that kind of separation of the text.
On the site, I found two journals dedicated to veterinary medicine: "BMC Veterinary Research" and "Acta Veterinaria Scandinavica".

    endemic - pärismaine
    density - sagedus
microscopical signs of inflammation - mikroskoopilised märgid põletikust
main reservoir and vector (of rabies) - peamine (marutõve) nö mahuti ja nakkusesiirutaja

  6. Here is my homework.

    I analyzed The Lancet
    1. The Lancet is mainly for doctors.
    2. I think it is quite hard to understand that journal when your medical vocabulary is not good.
    3. The journal is founded in 1823 by Thomas Wakley. Authors are different specialists who have found something new or interesting. The journal is currently ranked second in the medicine category.
    4. It is easy to find things, but you have to be a member or you even have to pay for articles (they are not cheap - about 30 USD for 24 hours online access).
    5. I like that you can always find what you want and sometimes the revision is enough. What is more all articles are really reliable and accurate - that is why it is one of my favourite online magazine.
    6. There is no commercial advertisements.
    7. lesion - vigastus, kahjustus, kõrvalekalle
    mortality - suremus
    protective isolation - kaitseisoleerimine
CNS - central nervous system - kesknärvisüsteem

  7. I analysed International Journal of Agriculture and Biology

    http://www.fspublishers.org/ijab/index_ijab.jsp

    1. I think this journal is for everybody who are interested and specialised in biology. There are many articles with different subjects. For example : 'Veterinary Education in Pakistan: Past Scenario and Future Requirements'
    or
'Rational Use of Drugs in Broiler Meat Production'.
    2. For me, the text is quite difficult and it seems me that it is pretty specific. There are many words and phrases what i don't know.
    3. The articles are written mostly by Pakistan authors. I belive this journal is fairly reliable. Editors are from various universities and the priority areas include: Life Sciences, Agricultural Chemistry, Genetic Engineering, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, Environmental Sciences (papers related to life sciences only), Medicine and Health Sciences, Agricultural Engineering.
    4. Aricles are easy to find but you can't read them immediately. Firstly you have to take the code or some number of this article and then have to find it from the issues (from home page).
    5. I think that it would be quite useful in future when i'm more related with this subject. At the moment these texts are too difficult to me and it would take too much time to read even one trough.
    6. Advertising is minimal
    7. fertility - viljakus
    yeast - pärm
    DNA sequence - DNA järjestus

  8. that too :) - genetic diversity - geneetiline mitmekesisus

  9. Hi!
It is perfectly fine that several of you have analysed the same journal. It just shows that the journal is good and worthy. Continue with your search and your comments. In the end, I will compile the list of words and word combinations and upload it here. Please do check the ÕIS tomorrow for the new assignments.
    Best regards and good luck,

  10. Sorry I´m posting so late but I wasn't able to access a computer until now.

I analyzed International Journal of Biological Sciences (www.biolsci.org).

    1. The journal is mainly for professionals and advanced students of biological sciences, but I think anybody interested can read and enjoy the texts.
    2. Language is very specific because the articles published in the journal are based on high quality scientific research.
    3. Editorial board consists of researchers and scientists from different Universities and research faculties around the world. One of the members is a Nobel Prize winner from 2007. Authors are scientists from around the world who are making their research public in this particular journal. There are separate author profiles available.
    4. Navigating the site is easy. There is a menu on the left side of the page and the overall design of the web-page is very simple.
    5. I liked the fact that the it was easy to find the articles on the page. The layout is very professional and there is no annoying advertising or popup windows. I thought that there could have been somekind of info or history section about the journal where people could find out when the journal was founded and the first issue published for example. There were also no links to other scientific journals.
    6. Advertising is very minimal; there is only one small Google banner.
    7. transcription factors=a protein that controls the transfer of genetic information from DNA to mRNA
recombination=the process by which a strand of genetic material is broken and then joined to a different DNA molecule

  11. I analysed the Journal of Biology.

    1. I think it is meant for everyody who is interested in these topics, but mainly for specialists and students.
    2. The language is quite understandable, although there are many specific phrases and words, the meaning of the whole text comes out. As for me it would be good to use also a dictionary.
    3. The editor is Mirand Robertson and the authots are various. They are mainly scientists whose researches and articles are accepted by the online administrators. There are given the places where those authors work. There are also added places where peole can get more information about these topics (books, webcites).
    4. There is a search bar, so it is quite easy for everybody to find out things they are looking for.
    5. As for me, I would like to read more about environmental problems, but there are more about microbiology.
    6. Advertising is very minimal.
    7. bloodline - järeltulijad
    cell membrane - rakumembraan
    reconstruct - taastama
    gene expression - geeni avaldumine

  12. Hi. I googled "wildlife journal online" and found a webpage www.wildlifedisease.org/jwd.htm.

    1. It's a homepage of Wildlife Disease Association. Their mission is to acquire and apply knowledge of the health and diseases of wild animals in relation to their biology and interactions with human. Webpage is for everyone who are interested.
    2. Language is rather easy, everything is understandable.
    3. The Association was formed in 1952 by 28 USA and Canadian biologists. Webmaster of the page: Bridget Schuler.
    4. There's a small menu, very easy to navigate.
    5. The most interesting are the publications and newsletters. There are quite a lot of different articles about educating people, meetings and conferences, and of course, several diseases.
    6. Advertising is reasonable, because the Association is worried about endangered species, public health and more.
    7. Free-range - piiramatu ala
    gain momentum - energiat koguma
    malady - haigus
    adjacent - kõrval

Sorry about posting so late. :)

  13. I also analysed the Journal of Biology (jbiol.com).

    1. I think Journal of Biology is for specialists and for people who are interested in the subject.
    2. The language is mostly understandable but there are many specific words and phrases that can be hard to understand.
    3. The articles are written by different authors and the references are mentioned at the end of each article so it is pretty reliable.
    4. I didn't find the journal of biology very easy to use at first.
    5. The site was OK.
    6. Reasonable. Not disturbing at all and all the ads I saw where about biology.
    7. Cattle, breed

  14. This is coming quite late but..
    I analysed "Journal of biology"(www.jbiol.com)

    1. I think that it´s more for people who are interested in the subject as you can write your own article.

    2. Language is quite understandable and easy. There are some words in every article that are specific, but when you read the whole text you can understand them quite well.

    3. Journal of biology is published by BioMed central. All articles are read by a scientist in the field before publishing. Every effort will be made to ensure that at least one of the three peer-reviewers for each article is selected from a list of ten provided by the author. So I think that this web-site is quite reliable.

    4. Navigation is easy because there´s a link "search" where you can write a key word and look for a suitable articles. All issues and content are also listed in oder of published date.

    5. I like that the website is easy to use and there are several different categories of articles.

    6. There are only few advertisements so they are no disturbing.

    7. endogenous = originating within an organ or part

susceptible=easily affected by emotion; easily influenced

biofeedback=method of acquiring control over normally involuntary bodily responses to stimuli

  15. I analysed The Journal of the Australian Veterinary Association Ltd.

    1. As magazines are aimed at the general public and journals at researchers or specialists, the Australian Veterinary Journal is no exception and its readers are veterinarians, student veterinarians, practice owners and managers, industry option leaders, veterinary nurses and governments.

    2. The language used in their high quality refereed scientific and clinical articles is specific and wouldn't have much to offer the non-specialist reader.

    3. The authors are professors and researchers of veterinary medicine and allied sciences from all over the country. I would consider the journal very reliable as each manuscript is reviewed by the Editorial Committee and the Associate Editors, before getting the final word from the Editor in Chief. They have also posted long and specific instructions for potential contributors.

    4. Navigating the site isn't difficult once you have signed up as a member. Each issue has the articles listed and it's possible to read a short abstract before the full story. Each article has a link for related articles and keywords.

    5. I really liked the wide range of their articles which unites all the Australian veterinarians, no matter if they are specialized on pets, farm animals, wildlife or food safety. I also found interesting how they cover each aspect of the job - for instance, I got to see a research about suicide in Australian veterinarians. Book reviews also seemed useful.

    6. The advertising is very minimal. I noticed a couple of tiny adverts which were actually connected to veterinary medicine so it wasn't disturbing.

    7. abattoir - tapamaja
    ointment - salv
    salivary glands - süljenäärmed
    blood transfusion - vereülekanne

    1. This page belongs to Wildlife Desiase Association and is for everyone interested in the health and desiases of wild animals in relation to their biology, conservation and interactions with human and domectic animals. They are focused on: endangered species, game and fur-bearing animals, wildlife conservation, rehabilitation, translocation, zoological parks, public health, comparative medicine etc.

    2. The language seems quiet easy to read and understandable even for students.

    3. This is the home page of Wildlife Desiase Association, established already in 1952 by 28 USA and Canadian biologists. Today, WDA management team consists of officers, council, editors and managers.

    4. This home page is really easy to navigate for everyone.

    5. The most interesting for me seemed the reports of widlife desiase investigations.

    6. The advertising did not disturb me.

    7. fur-bearing animal - karusloom
    mortality event - surmajuhtum
    amphibian - kahepaikne

  18. Hello,
    My analysis comes here.

I read the Journal of Biology http://epress.com/w3jbio/vol8/williams/williams.doc

The artcile named Capitalizing the Approved Common Names of Species is about the usage of common names, Latin specie names when giving new names to new animal species. The discussion is about how the correct system of giving names is followed by scientist.
I think the article is meant for specialists and students in the field, but can be of interest for scientists in other areas, too.
The language is easy to read and "reader friendly", without difficult word. Although, it´s an quite general article and review, it contains specific words.
The authors are scientist in the field. Unlike scientific articles, I find some critisism and point of views between the lines.
For the moment when I study anatomy, the article gave me new perspectives in Latin naming of species.
    New words:loathing->disscusting-> vastumeelsus(EE)

  19. I analysed Journal of Biology.
    http://jbiol.com/

1.I think Journal of Biology is mostly for specialists and students. It is an international journal that publishes biological research articles of exceptional interest together with associated commentary.

2.It seems that language is specific, but it is not so difficult that you do not understand anything.

3.Journal of Biology is the premier biology journal published by BioMed Cental.

4.It is easy to find journal articles and issues. It provides immediate free access to all articles online.

5.Articles have abstracts. I get overview if I still want to read that article. Articles has also PDF version.

6.Advertising is not disturbing. I did not notice it at all.

  20. I read the Online Journal of Veterinary Research ©

The journal's main purpose is to publish scientific work and therefor the articles were from various topics related to veterinary medicine, surgery and reasearch.

The article for my analysis is titled
Cervical vertebral movement in the horse.

The article is very scientific, but I found no big difficulties reading it, because I have previously read different articles on that topic. The article was very proffessional and gave new perspectives on the topic, but I would imagine it to be too hard to follow for someone not so familiar with the topic.

The journal itself is easily navigable and organised by annual and bi-annual issues of the journal and no advertising got my attention. The downside is that in order to view all full articles you need to login and subscribe to the journal.

The new words and phrases were:

nuchal ligament (Ligamentum Nuchae in Latin) - kaelaside (turjaside)
    dissection- lahkamine

  21. 1. Who is it for- specialists, people interested in the subject, both?
National Geographic is for specialistst but also for ordinary people, who are just interested in the subject.
There are different National Geographic journals:
    a. For children
    b. For teachers
    c. For little children- aged 3-6
    d. For travellers
    e. For adventurers
    f. For explorers
    g. For people who want to live „greener“ life
    2. Language- is it difficult and specific?Understandable and easy?
The language is difficult and easy, both. It depends from the article and who is it ment for. It’s purpose is to inspire people to care about their planet. Some articles have quite difficult and specific language, but not too difficult. The magazine is published in 32 languages.
    3. Reliability- where is it from?(how do you know?) Who are the authors?
It is a very old magazine, first issue was published in 1888, so it is quite reliable. The magazine is well-known. There are various authors, mainly scientists and specialists.
    4. Navigation- is it easy to find things?Describe the system?
It is quite easy to find things. On the front page in the center there is a place where you can type the thing you want to search for. After you enter the word and click search, it gives toy various results. First there are the articticles where the word is included in the heading, after those, then come the ones where the word or phrase is included in the text of the article. There is also a possibility to use advanced search and tips how to search.
    5. Which things did you like most?Anything , you didn’t like at all? Why?
The most I like are the photographs, they are always magnificant and with high quality. Every issue has different articles and there is always something useful and interesting to read. I didn’t like the advertising much in the side of the page, but it is quite difficult to finance the magazine without advertising.
    6. Advertising- reasonable, excessive, disturbing?
Advertising is reasonable, but for me a little disturbing because I do not like advertisments at all. At least, the things they advertise are communication means, e.g. mobilephones, and also the magazine’s different forms( for children, travellers, etc.)
    7. Choose 2 terms and 2 phrases for the Glossary and Vocabulary that worth remembering. These will be included in Vocabulary List for Test 1(in December)
    Terms:
    a. Maw- kiskja suu, lõuad
    b. Gullet- söögitoru
    Phrases:
    a. specimens of living creatures- elusate loomade näidised
    b. primordial form- ürgne/ennemuistne vorm

  22. I analysed Journal of Biology

1.In my opinion for specialists and for people who are interested in the subject, because you can read from there new interesting information, wihich is usefull for both.

    2. Language is understandable, but specific. In case when you don't know anything about the theme, what you read from the magazine, it's difficult to undersatnd it.

    3. The authors are specialists and people who are compentent in the specific field. Sources come from different scientific articles and pieces. The magazine is made from biologists and other competent specialists work. People from all over the world contribute to it.

    4. Yes, it is easy to find things. Top of the page, there are links and one is named "search". You have to click on it and you can write what is the title or who are the authors of article or you can search using the date of article.

5.I like that texts are separated to paragraphs and each paragraph has a title. In this way it's much easier to find what you looking for. I didn't find anything, which could be unlikeable.

    6. Advertising is reasonable. There were added pictures, which were suitable with theme.

    1. I think that this journal is for people who are really interested in the subject. And maybe it's not very atractive for specialists.

    2. Language is generally understanable but consists a lot of specific words.

    3. I think that this journal is reliable even if the articles are written by anyone because all articles are read by scientists before publishing.

    4. There is a "quick search" window to find a cert article. In my opinion it's very easy.

    5. I like thet the articles are compact(there's nothing unnecessary).

    6. Advertising is reasonable.

    http://www.nature.com/emboj/journal/v28/n18/full/emboj2009212a.html

    1. Meant clearly for specialists
    2. Extremely difficult to understand, unreadable for a person who is unfamiliar with specific terms.
    3. Slightly questionable. If I understood right anyone can post on the site, but the text are accepted before publishing
    4. Quite easy. Has a window on the side from which you pick to browse either by issue, subject or category, after that you pick the year and then you get all articles by name (free site, everything readable without logging in) The site is easy to find via Google
    5. I liked the way writers have listed everything so that the structure of article is very clear. I disliked the fact that text was so very difficult to understand.
    6. Next to no advertising
    7. I could not find translations to all of these, so I left them without rather than add faulty translation...

  26. I read the online journal from www.medicinejournal.co.uk. It’s a wide site of medical science and it includes much information of medicine for doctors and amateurs. Language is quite simple and understandable but there is of course some difficult medical vocabulary. There is a large group of Doctors and Professors who are the authors of the site and they are well presented there.
The site is very clear and it’s easy to find things from there and there is also possibility to search the specific things. The site doesn’t include much advertising. I didn’t like that some information is only for people who are registered.

  27. I'm really sorry for the delay.
My online journal is called 'Wildlife art journal'.It's not really scientific, but still really worthy reading.I've commented on it in a different way. It's more of an essay or report.

    Wildlife Art Journal.

Wildlife art journal is an international, online magazine that celebrates art in wildlife and the natural world.
’If you’re expecting the same old tired dialogue about “wildlife art”, you won’t find it here’,says editor Todd Wilkinson. This journal promises to hold your interest, confirm your love of the natural world and leave you entertained and fascinated.
Wildlife art journal was not created just for a certain circle of people, artists, gallery owners or museum professionals, but for whoever has a profound love for the natural world and an interest in protecting it for future generations .
The language is not difficult or specific at all,on the contrary,it is very comprehensible and accessible even for a non-specialist.
In the “contact” section you can find all the data you need and much more, like physical address, mailing address, local telephone, email address, website, the name of the publisher(Jared Swanson) and editor-in-chief(Todd Wilkinson). You can also find the subscriber services, production department and accounting department telephones and email addresses.Besides that, they also provide you with a interactive map to their office(which is located in the USA,btw) and links to sister publications. If you have any questions about the website or publications or you simply want to drop a quick note, you can do that using the form at the bottom of the page.
The website is mainly divided into 6 sections, which are called:1)’Home’.The homepage gives a short overview of the site’s contents and you can also sign up for free articles by email.
2)’Blog’.The blog views most recent entries and archives.
3)’Premium Articles’.Contains articles on exhibitions and openings, auction news, guest essays, questions and answers, letters, list of their contributors(authors and artists featured in their premium articles),subscription options.
4)’Archives’.A place where you can search for premium archives by author, artist, premium content or keyword and browse them.
5)’My account’.You can create an account in order to subscribe and purchase articles.
    6)’Contact information’
The things that I liked most about this online journal are that the content is very accessible and educational, the language is easy to understand and there are no difficulties with finding what you specifically need. Also, each article is accompanied with a topic-related slideshow. The only thing I didn’t like was that while much of the content on the site is free, premium content is reserved for premium subscribers.
The advertising is reasonable and associated with the journal’s main content.

  28. The Journal of Veterinary Science
    http://www.vetsci.org/

    1. I think it’s mostly meant for specialists because it’s quite hard to understand but maybe also for people who are interested on the subject.
    2. Language is quite specific and difficult to understand, many complicated terms.
    3. Reliable, because specialist write it. It is an international journal indexed in the Thomson Scientific Web of Science. The journal is published in English by the Korean Society of Veterinary Science (KSVS) and is distributed worldwide.
    4. I think that the system is very easy to use, all the journals are separated by years and the search makes it easy to find articles.
    5. I like that the articles are very elaborate and it is easy to find articles but many are too difficult for me to understand.
    6. Advertising is minimal.

  30. I analyzed the journal of biology ( www.jbiol.com)
    1. I think the journal is mainly for scientists, but also for those, who are interested in the subject. For a common reader the articles can be too specific and hard to understand.
2.I think the difficulty of the language depends on a article. Some of the articles are quite specific and they can be hard to grasp without more knowledge about distinct vocabulary.
    3. The journal is from BioMed Central and the editors of the jbol journal are mainly from US. The information about the authors is up on the website.
    4. Yes, it's easy to find things- the issues are navigated by date, you can search for articles and the popular ones are on the main page.
    5. I like that the sites recommends to you related articles, so you can easily find more information about the subject that interests you. Also when you don't have time to read the whole article, there are abstracts and minireviews that you can quickly read through to get the main point.
    6. Advertising is reasonable- not so distinguishable and there are no flashing advertises and pop-ups.
7.genetic fallacy -geneetiline eksitus (päritolust järelduvad omadused)
    ubiquitous -kõikjalviibiv, üldlevinud

  31. Better late then never, i guess.

I also analysed Journal of Biology.

1)It seems that the readership mostly consists of specialists, but it's probably also read by people, who are just interested in cellural biology.
2)The main idea of the articles is quite clear, but it contains several specific words and expressions that I for one couln't quite understand.
3)The articles are written by authors all over the world and the writers' personal information is also included.
4)Finding articles is rather simple. There is a search bar and the design of the webpage makes it quite convenient to use.
5)I like the versatility of different articles. There is nothing exceptionally good about the journal, but I cannot point out something that would disturb me either.
    6)The advertising is very minimal.
    7)succinct - tabav
    intractable - allumatu, tõrges

    1) I believe that it is mainly scientists or Specialists.
2 text and language difficulty depends mostly on content. Some were obvious, even pretty good, but some related terms were unclear.
    3) Articles were written by experts in the region around the globe, but a big part of America. In addition, information is available from the authors.
    4) Finding was pretty easy, since the site was a search box. In addition to the home page you can see the most popular articles

  34. I analysed horse-journal.

    1. I thinks this site is for both average horseowners, and specialists.

    2. Becouse of the site is so comprehensive, there are both easy and not that easy texts. If you know the most common horsebackriding- and horse terms, it should be quite unproblematic to understand most of the texts.

    3. The page was properly protected, so that outsiders could not write their texts on the page. The writer is mentioned in every text and it is possible to contact the authors.

    4. The frontpage is clear and easy to use. Links are on the left and the font is pleasant to read.

    5. I like the fact that most of the writers are professionals and their writings seem to be very accurate. I think that the page was a littlebit slow, mayde becouse it seems to be so widespread.

    6. I was glad to notice that there were very little advertisements, and those that were related to the subject.
