Seminar 10

The seminar starts with doing some grammar exercises on the „Reported Speech“ (First certificate Unit 6 Exercise 8-10 pages 30-31; the exercises and the key can be found on ÕIS)

The seminar continues by the students working in pairs or in groups of three and doing each other’s crosswords.

The seminar continues by a discussion of the types of lexical exercises that should be included into the Worksheet (Assignment 15 – 1 day before presentation)

Types of assignments in the Worksheet:

4 questions – the questions should be based on the presentation and be arranged in the ordered the information is presented. The questions should be on the key issues of the presentation and it should be possible to summarise the presentation by using the answers to those four questions

3 synonyms and 3 antonyms - the words should be related to the field of study.

5 sentences where gaps are to be filled – the gaps may relate to minor details of the presentation, which the presenter still considers important. Numbers, geographical names, names of the species or breeds are examples of good information for a gap-filling exercise.

Homework:

Presenters prepare their presentations and worksheets (Assignment 15 – 1 day before presentation).

Assignment 16: 5 collocations from the presentation different from those presented for the report. - 1 day before the date of the presentation

Text “Researcher Uncovering Mysteries of Memory by Studying a Clever Bird” (read and do assignments 2 and 3 after the text)

Text „Animal Kingdom“: discussion of the text and doping lexical exercises

Analysis of the mistakes in the test

Homework:

Make a crossword of 15 words from the words from the report and send it to the lecturer’s e-mail by 7.04.2012 (Assignment 14)

Those who got the negative grade for the test do the corrections and bring them to the next class.

The seminar continues with the vocabulary exercises from the textbook “Science”. The students work in groups of 3 or 4 on the exercises and then they are checked by the whole class.

The students read and discuss the text “Cell” and do the exercises afterwards.

Seminar 5

The lecturer collects the corrections of the gist (Assignment 10 – 05.03.2012).

The seminar continues with the discussion of the “How to cite sources in an academic paper” and is followed by the discussion of the outline of the report(Assignment 7 - 05.03.2012). The students are encouraged to prepare the list of the necessary quotations and citations for the report and have them at the next class. The citations and quotations should be provided with the appropriate references. At the end of the report there should be also a list of references. The students are allowed to have this information electronically at the next class and use it for report writing.

The students work in pairs and practice the sentences with the collocations from the first summary and articles (Assignment 12 – 05.03.2012).
